Day 5: Re-Genesis

Feeling very meta today about the act of creation and the way we play with ideas and stories in our minds. I’ve had one in my head for half a year now, more or less stagnating, watching all my other ideas pass it by. Then a few days ago I had a new idea, one that would be a stretch to make work. It had heart and structure but lacked originality. Then came the old idea, which I think has a great concept but the characters weren’t leaping out at me and the story wasn’t wanting to shape. They came together like they were meant to be. It’s tough letting go of pieces of each of them, but the new thing is far more powerful and I can’t wait to bring it to life.

Day 290: Morning Muse

I woke up to the wonderful sight that inspired today’s poem. If ever any evidence was needed that I married well…

Day 119: Open

Yesterday when I was writing at one of my favorite coffee shops on the island (and one my my favorite places in general) I noticed an open journal on a coffee table. The journal itself was a work of art, but what truly made it special we’re the contents. I’d never stoop to reading someone else’s personal journal without their blessing, however, with the pages open I caught a glimpse of detailed sketches and painstakingly written notes that were simply breathtaking. I rarely keep nice notebooks because rarely are my own notes and art anywhere near nice. In a way I don’t feel like my chicken scratch is worthy of the journal. This young woman’s was. Beyond any shadow of a doubt.

Day 112: Tropical Storm Barry

First potential tropical storm coming our way since we moved to the island. Naturally it’s the weekend we’ve got family coming down to visit. Oh well. Should be an interesting experience and one I intend to make the best of and have some fun.

Day 123: How We Wither

Heh, today is day one two three. How about that?

Been fighting a bug that likes to strike hardest when I get up in the morning, which is when I usually do my writing. It’s driving me just a little bit crazy.

Day 97: Chase the Shine

Wait, Day 97? What happened to 96?

I missed it.

No excuse, I had an opportunity to do it during my break at work and I passed on. After that, when I got home I crashed. Hard. Been trying to do so much lately. Not the point.

I am proud that it took me 96 days before is missed a poem. New goal: try to go the rest of the year without missing another one. If I am to miss another, try to beat my 96 day streak.

Today’s poem is inspired by missing yesterday’s. I couldn’t tell you why Neverland and Peter Pan popped into my head, exactly, though in this context it certainly makes sense. Those stories are really depressing and downright frightening at their heart. Missed and stolen opportunities.

A piece of me mourns the loss of yesterday’s poem. It will never be written, never grow up, or go on adventures. It won’t even get to die because it was never born. Simply missed. An adventure not taken, an opportunity not explored. On the other hand, I am taking to heart why this is so valuable to me. The pursuit of dreams, seeing beauty realized and brought to fruition. Here is a rededication to never stop chasing the shine.

Day 95: Words Spin

Thinking again about words. Was going to try and get clever by making something out of silly words but the harder I looked the more familiar the words became. Not so sure what that says about me. I gave up and made this instead. Not half bad, I don’t think.

Day 77: The Written Word

There is power in stories. Hypnotic power that can keep us turning the page long past when we should have stopped to go to bed. Power to transcend the senses and conjure powerful reactions, sometimes even physical reactions. This is what I hope to replicate with my work. For now, I simply wonder at it.
