Day 83: Brain Center

Does anybody else ever wonder about your brain? What distinguishes us from it? When you get down to it, we are the sum of our memories which create our thoughts, electrical pulses zipping back and forth across this squiggly mass of grey matter. Are we the flesh housing or the energy coursing through it? Both? Neither?

Day 73: Instruments of Creation

Oops! I wrote today’s poem but got interrupted when I started to put it up on the blog. Almost forgot entirely that it still needs to be shared!

My bride and I have been having problems with our technology lately. My computer has been giving me no end of grief and trying to replace it hasn’t been a picnic. Just about everything that can go wrong has. Yesterday we had one of those freak accidents that would be hilarious if it wasn’t so expensive.

Our dog got spooked by an insect biting him on the bottom and spun around. I’m doing so he caught the phone charger hooked up to my bride’s phone, pulling the phone off the table and on top of him. Already panicked, he bit the phone. I could not make this up. The phone is all but unusable. Fortunately the puppy is fine.

The entire affair has me thinking about humanity’s relationship with its tools. We really aren’t that impressive a species when you think about it, not until you begin to examine our minds, adaptability, and ingenuity. Take away our tools and it’s a drastic blow to our effectiveness and capability.

Day 72: Emotion Engine

Sometimes we get down. Not in the fun way. Sometimes we start out strong, a few things don’t go our way, and we crash.

My bride reminded me of a secret I learned a little while ago–that smiling tricks the body, the voice, and the mind. By projecting happiness into the world, we take it back in. Our spirits are fascinating engines capable of producing our own fuel.

Day 71: Misty Morning Road

Confession. These last few weeks have been a little tough. I keep getting sick and I’ve been bouncing back and forth between Computer Purgatory and Computer Hell. It’s had me down and I steadily slipped away from the good habits and routines I set forth to establish for this new year and new life. Today I got up early and set myself back onto that path of self betterment.

The sea fog is back in town full force today after our first glimpse of sunshine in weeks. It, the drive to work, and my return to the positive systems that have brought me this far inspired today’s poem.

Day 69: Empty Word

Thinking today on communication again, on words and writing and the ideas and concepts that give them meaning. Didn’t intend to go into labels with this poem, but it sort of sprang up. It seems to me a natural consequence of what happens when we embrace symbols while abandoning their meaning.

Day 62: Untitled

Taking a day or rest. The last week or so has been crazy. Glad to dial it down a bit today and in doing so I solved several creative issues I was having. Funny how that works.

No title for this piece yet. I’m open to suggestions.
